Tile Repair

Tile repair across San Diego County

Not every tile problem is a full reset. A cracked floor tile, a loose shower wall tile, or a failed grout joint can often be repaired without pulling out the entire field. We connect San Diego homeowners with insured local tile setters who assess the extent of the damage first, recommend repair when it makes sense, and give you a straight answer when the damage is too widespread to fix without a full replacement.

Tile setter removing a single cracked floor tile for replacement in a San Diego County bathroom floor without disturbing surrounding tiles

What's included in this service?

  • Sound the existing tile field to locate hollow or delaminated tile that has lost its bond to the substrate
  • Remove individual cracked, chipped, or hollow tiles without damaging the surrounding field using a grout saw and oscillating tool
  • Address the underlying cause before setting the replacement tile: rebond the substrate, repair the crack-isolation membrane, or address a moisture issue
  • Set replacement tile in matching thin-set and grout, matching color and joint width to the existing field as closely as possible
  • Re-grout cracked or missing grout joints in a section of tile without replacing the tile itself when the tile is sound
  • Patch the waterproofing membrane under failed wet-area tile before setting replacement tile in a shower or bathroom floor

When do you need this service?

  • One or more tiles are cracked, chipped, or broken and you want them replaced without touching the rest of the floor
  • Tiles sound hollow when you tap them, indicating they have lost their bond to the substrate and may lift or crack under foot traffic
  • Shower wall tiles are coming off the wall, especially in the lower half of the shower where moisture is highest
  • Grout joints in a floor or shower are cracking repeatedly despite being patched, suggesting movement in the substrate that needs to be addressed
  • A small section of tile in a bathroom or kitchen is damaged from a plumbing repair or appliance replacement and needs to be put back

What do homeowners ask about Tile Repair?

Can a single cracked tile be replaced without removing the whole floor?

Yes, in most cases. A tile setter can remove one or several individual tiles using a grout saw and oscillating tool without damaging the surrounding field, as long as the adjacent tiles are well-bonded and the substrate underneath is in good condition. The replacement tile is set in matching thin-set and grouted to match the existing joint color. A perfect match is not always possible on older tile, and your setter advises you on this at the estimate.

What does hollow tile mean?

Hollow tile is tile that has lost its bond to the substrate beneath it. When you tap the tile and it produces a drum-like hollow sound rather than a dense thud, the tile is delaminated from the mortar bed. Hollow tile is structurally weak and will eventually crack under foot traffic. The fix is to remove the tile, address whatever caused the bond failure (often incomplete thin-set coverage), and reset the tile.

Why do shower tiles come off the wall?

Shower wall tiles typically come off because the original waterproofing membrane was missing or has failed, allowing moisture to saturate the backer board and break down the thin-set bond. Poor initial thin-set coverage (less than 80% on walls) is also a common cause. In either case, the fix requires removing the failed tile, addressing the membrane, and resetting with proper coverage. A tile-over-tile patch on top of the existing tile will not hold long-term.

When does tile repair make sense versus a full replacement?

Repair makes sense when the damage is limited to a small number of tiles, the rest of the field is sound and well-bonded, and the substrate underneath is in good condition. Full replacement is the better call when more than 20-30% of the tile is hollow or cracked, when the underlying membrane has failed across the whole shower or floor, or when the original installation was so poor that patching one area will just push the failure to the next section.

Can grout be repaired without replacing the tile?

Yes. Regrouting a section of tile (removing the old cracked or missing grout and applying fresh grout) is a common repair that does not require replacing the tile itself, as long as the tile underneath is still sound and well-bonded. If the same grout joints are cracking repeatedly after being repaired, that usually signals substrate movement underneath that a grout patch alone will not fix.

Homeowners who hired us for this

Our shower was leaking behind the wall for who knows how long. The crew they matched us with pulled everything, installed a proper membrane, and set the new tile perfectly. Looks incredible and no more moisture issues.

Jessica R. Shower and Bath Tile · Encinitas

Had them redo our kitchen and entryway floors with large-format porcelain. The leveling work on our slab was done right and the lippage is basically zero. Very happy with the finished result.

Marcus T. Floor Tile · Chula Vista

Kitchen backsplash from counter to upper cabinets in a herringbone pattern. Clean cuts around the outlets and the grout lines are perfectly even. One day in and out.
